An Unforgettable Week: Our Portugal Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Lisbon & The Charms of Alfama
My arrival in Lisbon around 11:30 AM on a Wednesday was met with a mix of weariness from a long, sleepless flight and an exhilarating anticipation of the adventures ahead. Etienne, whose flight from Amsterdam had touched down a few hours prior, was already brimming with energy, eager to kickstart our Portuguese escapade. For me, stepping into a country where English wasn’t the primary language after a considerable time brought an immediate, albeit delightful, sense of culture shock – a thrilling reminder of the vast world beyond my usual confines.
Our first challenge unfolded at the train ticket vending machine, a minor skirmish that tested our patience but ultimately led us onto our path. After settling into our hotel, we set out to explore Lisbon’s vibrant heart. We were drawn into the historic Alfama district, a labyrinth of narrow, winding lanes that felt like a village frozen in time. These cobblestone streets, steeped in centuries of history, gradually led us down to the bustling waterfront. It was here, amidst the refreshing sea breeze, that I captured the striking image of King Jose I atop his magnificent bronze horse, a regal guardian overlooking the Tagus River. Our evening culminated in a cozy dinner within the same charming area, indulging in the simple pleasures of pizza and wine – a perfect end to a day of travel and initial exploration before an early night’s rest.
Day 2: Lisbon’s Historic Heart & Sintra’s Enchantment
Day two began with an absolutely delightful breakfast buffet at our hotel, a spread so generous it ensured a very satisfied start to the day. Fully energized, we retraced our steps back into the Alfama, this time with a specific destination in mind: the iconic São Jorge Castle. Perched majestically atop one of Lisbon’s highest hills, the castle offered unparalleled panoramic views of the city’s terracotta rooftops, the sparkling Tagus, and the distant bridges. It was a truly breathtaking vista, made even more enjoyable by the discovery of a charming little wine cart within the castle grounds. What better way to soak in such a magnificent scene than with a crisp glass of local wine, relishing the peace and beauty of the moment?

Our cultural immersion continued as we embarked on a short train journey to the nearby fairytale town of Sintra. This magical locale, famed for its Romanticist architecture and lush landscapes, graces the cover of the Lonely Planet guide for good reason. Sintra is a realm of enchantment, and our visit included two of its most iconic landmarks: the vibrantly colored Pena Palace and the ancient, brooding Castelo dos Mouros. Pena Palace, with its whimsical turrets and bold hues, felt like stepping into a storybook, a true masterpiece of 19th-century Romanticism.

A particularly fascinating highlight inside Pena Palace was its original kitchen, meticulously preserved with the very pots and pans once used by royalty. Every utensil and vessel was intricately engraved, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of the era. One couldn’t help but imagine the culinary creations that once filled this grand space, and I confess, the thought of trying out a few recipes there myself was quite tempting!

Our journey through Sintra’s palaces and castles left us utterly exhausted but exhilarated. As evening approached, our primary mission became finding an outdoor dining experience, a seemingly simple desire that proved surprisingly difficult in Sintra. Despite our determination, we eventually opted to take the train back to Lisbon, where we finally secured a table al fresco. The irony, however, was not lost on us: by the time we sat down, the sun had already set, rendering our outdoor pursuit somewhat moot. Nevertheless, it was a day filled with unparalleled beauty and historical grandeur.
Day 3: Alentejo’s Rustic Charm & Evora’s Delights
Leaving the bustling energy of Lisbon behind, our third day began with the practical task of renting a car, a process that surprisingly consumed nearly two hours of our morning at the airport. The wait was undeniably frustrating, but our spirits lifted upon discovering our rental: a fun, compact Toyota Yaris, complete with a stick shift. For me, it was a nostalgic trip down memory lane, as this was the newer version of a car I once drove. The sheer joy of driving a manual transmission again on open roads was exhilarating, and we were both immensely grateful that Portugal’s driving side aligns with ours, making navigation much smoother.
Our destination was the Alentejo, Portugal’s largest and most tranquil region, renowned for its vast cork oak forests, authentic traditional cuisine, and burgeoning wineries. The drive south unveiled a landscape vastly different from Lisbon’s urban sprawl, with rolling plains and scattered cork trees dotting the horizon. We ultimately arrived in the historic city of Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Navigating Evora’s ancient heart proved to be an adventure in itself; the cobblestone streets were incredibly narrow, barely accommodating our little Yaris, feeling more like pedestrian paths than car routes. After a series of intricate maneuvers and re-navigations, we finally reached the sanctuary of our hotel, ready for some well-deserved relaxation.
That evening, we sought out a local winery for some much-anticipated tastings, which led us to the exceptional Cartuxa winery and its in-town restaurant. The experience was nothing short of culinary bliss. The wine, a testament to Alentejo’s rich viticultural heritage, was surprisingly affordable and wonderfully complex. The food, however, was the true star of the evening – a symphony of fresh, unique flavors that left us completely satiated, perhaps even a little *too* full!

Our feast included a delightful fresh fish and vegetable stew, bursting with the vibrant flavors of the region, and an incredibly tender roasted rabbit salad, showcasing the best of Portuguese gastronomy. Each dish was a testament to the freshness of local ingredients and the unique culinary traditions of Alentejo. Paired with the exquisite, reasonably priced wine, we might have indulged a tad more than intended, but with no regrets!

Adding to the evening’s charm, Evora was hosting a vibrant carnival, a serendipitous discovery that provided the perfect post-dinner entertainment. We spent the remainder of the night happily wandering through the lively festivities, soaking in the festive atmosphere and the authentic local culture. It was a truly memorable day, blending historical exploration with exquisite culinary experiences.
Day 4: Algarve’s Golden Coasts & Seafood Feasts
Our fourth day dawned with an eager anticipation for the coast, a scenic 2.5-hour drive that would take us from the Alentejo to the famed Algarve region. Our destination was a charming small town nestled near Albufeira, Portugal’s renowned coastal party hub. Without delay, we made a beeline for the beach, and what a revelation it was! While Portugal’s cultural and historical riches are widely celebrated, its beaches, in our humble opinion, are shockingly underrated. We had heard little fanfare about them previously, but the reality was nothing short of stunning.
The Algarve’s coastline unfolded before us as a masterpiece of nature: dramatic red rocky cliffs plunging into the cerulean sea, framing expansive stretches of golden sand. The fine, soft sand underfoot and the warm, inviting sun overhead created an idyllic setting. We wholeheartedly embraced the moment, spending our entire afternoon basking in the glorious sunshine, swimming in the gentle waves, and simply soaking in the unparalleled beauty of this coastal paradise. It was pure bliss, a perfect escape into natural tranquility.

Dinner that night was an experience in itself, at a fantastic fresh seafood restaurant conveniently located right off the beach. The dining concept was wonderfully interactive: you literally pointed to the fresh fish, plump shrimp, or succulent lobster displayed on ice that you wished to have prepared. Once cooked to perfection, the attentive staff brought your chosen seafood to the table, expertly deboning and serving it with graceful precision. The freshness was undeniable, each bite a testament to the ocean’s bounty. This exquisite meal paired perfectly with a pitcher of vibrant red sangria – a delightful discovery that quickly became my new obsession, perfectly complementing the rich flavors of the seafood.

As the day gracefully transitioned into evening, we concluded our perfect day with a leisurely stroll along the beach, bathed in the warm, ethereal glow of the sunset. The sky transformed into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples, casting a magical spell over the entire landscape. It was a truly amazing and serene end to a day filled with sun, sea, and sensational flavors.

Day 5: Tavira’s Island Escape & Local Treasures
Our fifth day in Portugal was dedicated to another exploration of the Algarve’s stunning coastline, leading us to the picturesque island of Tavira, roughly an hour’s drive away. En route, we made a stop at a charming small town, eager to savor some authentic Portuguese cuisine and hunt for unique souvenirs. It was here that I was delighted to discover the ubiquitous presence of the “lucky rooster” – a symbol I was familiar with, having previously received a hand-painted one as a Mother’s Day gift. I had no idea these vibrant roosters, symbolizing good fortune and integrity, were *everywhere* in Portugal, a true national emblem. Naturally, I picked up a few smaller versions as gifts, eager to share a piece of Portugal’s charm.
After a satisfying lunch and our souvenir hunt, we arrived at Tavira. Accessing its pristine beach offered two delightful options: a long, scenic walk across a wooden boardwalk or a charming ride on a mini-train. The choice was clear – a ride on the delightful mini-train was an absolute must, adding a whimsical touch to our journey to the shore.

The beach itself was undeniably beautiful, a tranquil expanse of sand and sea. For the more adventurous, a kilometer’s walk to the east revealed an official nudist beach – certainly an interesting local feature, to say the least. Regardless of where one settled, the natural splendor of Tavira’s shores was captivating, and we happily spent the majority of our day reveling in its beauty, swimming, and relaxing by the ocean.
Our evening saw us return to Albufeira for another memorable dinner. This time, our culinary exploration led us to a fantastic seafood cataplana. This traditional Portuguese dish, cooked in a distinctive clam-shaped copper pot, is essentially a rich and flavorful stew brimming with fresh seafood, tender potatoes, and vibrant vegetables, all simmering in a delicious tomato-based broth. It was an explosion of fresh, aromatic flavors, perfectly complemented by more refreshing sangria and local wine. My only regret from that evening is not capturing a picture of that magnificent cataplana – its memory, however, remains vivid!
Day 6: Eastern Coast Serenity & Lisbon Farewell
Our final full day in Portugal began with a bittersweet farewell to the glorious Algarve region as we started our drive back towards Lisbon. Eager to maximize every moment, we decided on a stop halfway up the Eastern coast at one of the most exquisitely beautiful and wonderfully secluded beaches I’ve ever encountered. The added bonus of its tranquility, with only a handful of other people present, made it feel like our own private paradise. The pristine sands, the gentle lapping of the waves, and the sheer untouched beauty offered a perfect moment of serene reflection before returning to the city.

After a reluctant departure from this glorious beach, we drove straight back to Lisbon to return our rental car. And yes, a quick stop at McDonald’s was made – sometimes, a familiar comfort food hits the spot after days of gourmet exploration, no judgment necessary! With the car returned, we took an Uber into the bustling heart of Lisbon once more. Our last evening in Portugal included a short, scenic ferry ride to a charming small island just off the coast, where we planned our farewell dinner. By this point, after several days of incredible seafood, we were surprisingly “seafood-ed out,” so we opted for a more classic choice: pizza, naturally paired with excellent Portuguese wine.
The logistics of departure meant an early start for Etienne, whose flight left at 5 AM the following morning. By the time we returned to the hotel and meticulously packed our belongings, he managed a mere 2.5 hours of sleep before having to rush off to the airport. My flight was a couple of hours later, thankfully granting me a precious bit more rest. Despite the early morning hustles, our hearts were full from the incredible experiences.
Arriving home, it was a joy to be reunited with our boys, who greeted us with ecstatic delight. Everyone was happy, healthy, and back together. While I had initially been anxious about being so far away from my children, this trip with Etienne was an invaluable opportunity to explore a new country together, to reconnect, and to create lasting memories. If you are contemplating a European vacation, please, give Portugal a chance! We merely scratched the surface of this amazing place, and it left an indelible mark on our hearts, showcasing a stunning array of landscapes, flavors, and history.
Now, the eternal question remains: where to next on our journey of discovery…?
