It’s a meal that guarantees happy, shiny faces around the dinner table, and it requires a surprisingly minimal effort. So, let’s dive into how you can bring this magic to your own kitchen, creating a memorable meal with just two ingredients and your trusty slow cooker.

Why These Are the Absolute Best Slow Cooker Ribs
If the promise of succulent, fall-off-the-bone ribs hasn’t completely won you over yet, allow me to elaborate on why this recipe stands head and shoulders above the rest. It’s not just about the incredible taste; it’s about the entire cooking experience, designed for maximum flavor with minimal fuss:
- **Unbeatable Simplicity:** This recipe truly takes only 5 minutes of active preparation time. Yes, FIVE! This makes it ideal for busy weeknights when you want a homemade meal without the stress.
- **Completely Hands-Off Cooking:** Once your ribs are in the slow cooker, you can walk away and let the magic happen. Except for a final 5-minute flourish under the broiler, your slow cooker handles all the hard work, freeing you up to tackle other tasks or simply relax.
- **Aromatic Bliss:** As these savory ribs slowly cook, your entire home will be filled with an irresistibly delicious aroma. It’s the kind of scent that builds anticipation and makes everyone eager for dinner time.
- **Consistent Tenderness:** The low and slow cooking method ensures that the tough connective tissues in the ribs break down gradually, resulting in meat that is incredibly tender and moist, effortlessly sliding off the bone.
- **Economical and Accessible:** With only two primary ingredients, this recipe is budget-friendly and easy to execute, especially during times when grocery shopping might be limited.
The Magic of Just Two Ingredients
You might be wondering how such spectacular ribs can be achieved with just two ingredients. The secret lies in the power of quality components and the genius of the slow cooker. When you combine a good rack of pork ribs with your favorite barbecue sauce, the slow cooker transforms them into something extraordinary. The extended cooking time allows the flavors of the sauce to deeply penetrate the meat, while the moist environment keeps the ribs incredibly tender. The sauce itself provides all the necessary seasoning, sweetness, and tang, eliminating the need for a complex spice rub or marinade.
While this recipe emphasizes simplicity, feel free to customize your experience by choosing a barbecue sauce that truly excites your palate. Whether you prefer a smoky, sweet, tangy, or spicy profile, the sauce is your key to tailoring the flavor. I often make my own sauce when time allows, but when I’m short on minutes, I reach for a trusted store-bought option like Amazing Dad’s Original BBQ Sauce – it never disappoints!
How to Make These Irresistible Slow Cooker Ribs
Preparing these crockpot ribs is incredibly straightforward, guaranteeing a successful and delicious outcome every time. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the steps:
Choosing Your Ribs
Start with a 2 1/2 to 3-pound rack of ribs. While this recipe is incredibly versatile, I typically opt for back ribs (also known as baby back ribs) due to their meaty texture and ideal size for slow cookers. These ribs are cut from the loin area and are leaner and more tender than spare ribs. However, you can absolutely use other cuts like spare ribs or St. Louis style ribs. The most important thing is that the ribs fit comfortably in your slow cooker. If you have a larger rack, you might need to cut it into smaller sections to ensure it fits without overcrowding. Should you opt for a different size or type, simply adjust the amount of barbecue sauce accordingly.
Preparation: Sauce Application
Place your chosen rack of ribs on a baking sheet or a clean cutting board. Using a pastry brush, generously spread about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of your preferred barbecue sauce all over the meaty side of the ribs. This initial layer of sauce will infuse the ribs with flavor as they cook and help create that desirable sticky exterior.

To Remove or Not to Remove the Membrane?
This is a common question when cooking ribs. The membrane is a thin, silverskin layer on the bone side of the ribs. Many chefs recommend removing it for a more tender bite, as it can become tough and chewy. However, in my experience, especially with the “low and slow” method of a slow cooker, I rarely find it makes a significant enough difference to warrant the extra step. I’ve spent the time removing it before, but truthfully, I’ve never noticed a big enough improvement to make it a routine part of my rib-making process. If you prefer, feel free to remove it using a sharp knife to carefully lift an edge and then peel it off with a paper towel for grip. It’s entirely up to your personal preference!
Setting Up the Slow Cooker
Add about 1/4 cup of barbecue sauce to the bottom of your slow cooker. Spread it evenly with the back of a spoon. This layer helps prevent sticking and adds another dimension of flavor to the cooking liquid.
Carefully place the sauced ribs into your slow cooker. For best results and even cooking, arrange them along the walls of the crockpot, standing them upright if necessary. This helps ensure that the heat circulates well around the meat. Once the ribs are in place, secure the lid.

The Slow Cooking Process
Set your slow cooker to cook on the LOW setting for 6-7 hours. This “low and slow” method is crucial for achieving that signature fall-off-the-bone tenderness. The gentle heat allows the collagen in the meat to break down slowly into gelatin, resulting in incredibly moist and succulent ribs.
If you’re short on time, you can certainly speed up the cooking process by turning the temperature to MEDIUM and cooking for 3-4 hours. While this will still yield delicious ribs, the prolonged cooking on low will undeniably result in a much more tender piece of meat. Patience truly pays off in the world of slow-cooked ribs!
Achieving That Irresistible Crispy, Sticky Exterior
Okay, this is hands down the best and most crucial part of the entire slow cooker ribs process! After hours of slow cooking, your ribs will be incredibly tender but might not look overtly enticing or have that classic sticky, caramelized texture you associate with perfect BBQ ribs. This final step is what transforms them from simply cooked to truly spectacular.
Once the slow cooker ribs are done, carefully remove them and place them on a large baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. This makes for easy cleanup! On top of the foil, place a wire rack. Lay the cooked ribs on the wire rack, ensuring they are meaty side up. Using a clean pastry brush (it’s important not to use the same brush you used on the raw ribs without cleaning it thoroughly first), generously spread another 1/4 cup of barbecue sauce over the top of the ribs.
Now, place the baking sheet with the ribs under the broiler of your oven. Set the broiler to HIGH. Keep a close eye on them, as this process is very fast. Broil for approximately 5 to 6 minutes, or until the sauce is visibly bubbling, slightly caramelized, and has developed a beautiful sticky, glossy texture. This high heat quickly caramelizes the sugars in the barbecue sauce, creating that desirable crispy, sticky crust that truly elevates the ribs. Serve them immediately while they’re warm and at their peak of deliciousness!

What to Serve with Your Perfect Slow Cooker Ribs
These incredibly flavorful slow cooker ribs pair wonderfully with a variety of side dishes, allowing you to create a complete and satisfying meal. We often serve them simply with steamed rice and mixed vegetables or fresh green beans for a balanced plate. However, feel free to get creative and explore other options that complement the rich, savory flavor of the ribs:
- Loaded Smashed Potatoes: Creamy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and loaded with your favorite toppings – a hearty and delicious companion.
- 30-Minute Dinner Rolls: Soft, warm, and perfect for soaking up every last bit of that amazing barbecue sauce.
- Flavorful Yellow Rice: A vibrant and aromatic rice dish that adds a lovely contrast to the richness of the ribs.
- Easy Coconut Rice: For a touch of subtle sweetness and exotic flavor, coconut rice is an excellent choice.
- **Creamy Coleslaw:** The crisp, cool crunch of coleslaw provides a refreshing counterpoint to the tender, warm ribs.
- **Corn on the Cob:** A classic BBQ side, sweet corn on the cob is always a hit.
- **Baked Beans:** Hearty and flavorful, baked beans are a quintessential partner to ribs.
Even with occasional food shortages or limited grocery shopping trips, it’s reassuring to know that you only need two ingredients to create such a wicked, satisfying dinner. These ribs are a testament to how simple ingredients can yield extraordinary results.

FAQs About Slow Cooker Ribs
Can I use frozen ribs?
It’s always best to thaw your ribs completely before placing them in the slow cooker. Cooking frozen meat can increase the cooking time significantly and sometimes result in uneven cooking or a less tender outcome.
What kind of slow cooker should I use?
Any standard slow cooker or crockpot will work! Ensure it’s large enough to comfortably fit your rack of ribs, even if you need to cut them into smaller portions.
How do I store leftover ribs?
Leftover ribs can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. They also freeze well for up to 2-3 months.
How do I reheat leftover ribs?
For best results, reheat ribs gently in the oven. Place them on a baking sheet, cover loosely with foil, and bake at 300°F (150°C) until warmed through. You can also quickly reheat them in the microwave, but the oven helps retain moisture and texture. A quick brush with extra BBQ sauce before reheating can also revive their flavor.

Description
These are the BEST slow cooker ribs! You’ll never believe that these crockpot ribs can be made with only 2 INGREDIENTS! They’re saucy, slightly sticky and fall-off-the-bone delicious.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 lb – 3 lb rack of back ribs*
- 3/4 cup barbeque sauce of choice, divided
Instructions
- Place the rack(s) of ribs on a cutting board or baking sheet. Using a pastry brush, spread 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup of sauce over the front of the ribs (the meaty side). Add 1/4 cup of sauce to the bottom of the crockpot, spreading it around with the back of a spoon. Place the ribs along the walls of the crockpot, put the lid on and cook the ribs on low, for 6-7 hours.**
- Preheat your oven to broil on high. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil, then place a wire rack on top of the baking sheet. Remove the cooked ribs from the crockpot, to the wire rack. Using a pastry brush (do not use the one that you used on the raw ribs without cleaning it first), spread 1/4 cup of barbeque sauce over the top of the ribs (meaty side up) and place the ribs under the broiler for 5-6 minutes, until the sauce is bubbly and the ribs look “sticky”. Serve immediately!
Leftover ribs keep in an airtight container, in the fridge, for 2-3 days.
Notes
*You can use a different cut of ribs, if that’s what you have, or a different size. Just be sure to account for the size different with the amount of barbeque sauce you use.
**If you have less time, you can speed up the cooking process by cooking the ribs on medium for 3-4 hours instead. Low and slow will result in a more tender meat, though!
