Crafting the Perfect Skillet Loaded Cheese Fries: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating these incredibly flavorful and satisfying cheesy fries requires just a few simple ingredients, many of which you likely already have readily available in your pantry or cooler. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and the way humble components come together to create something truly extraordinary. It’s a fantastic option for those moments when you want maximum flavor with minimal fuss, especially when cooking in an outdoor setting.

For the base of our delicious fries, this recipe calls for three yellow-skinned potatoes. While red potatoes can certainly be used, we highly recommend yellow varieties like Yukon Gold. Their naturally buttery flavor and creamy texture make them an ideal choice for frying, resulting in fries that are both tender on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside. Along with these foundational potatoes, you will need:

  • Crispy Bacon: Adds a savory, smoky crunch that elevates the entire dish. Don’t discard the rendered fat – it’s key for cooking the potatoes!
  • Melted Cheese: A generous amount of your favorite meltable cheese is essential for that gooey, irresistible texture.
  • Bush’s® Baked Beans: The heart of the “loaded” aspect, providing a sweet and savory, saucy counterpoint to the fries.
  • Smoked Paprika & Salt: These seasonings bring warmth and depth to the potatoes, enhancing their natural flavor.
  • Cool Sour Cream: A dollop on top adds a refreshing tang and creamy texture that balances the richness of the cheese and beans.
  • Optional Toppings: Fresh jalapeños for a spicy kick and vibrant green onions for a mild, oniony freshness.

Let’s dive into the cooking process, transforming these ingredients into a masterpiece of skillet perfection.

Prepping and Cooking Your Ingredients

Begin your culinary journey by preparing the bacon. Lay the strips evenly in your cast-iron skillet and cook them over medium heat until they are beautifully crisped up and irresistibly delicious. Once they reach golden-brown perfection, carefully remove the bacon using a slotted spoon and place it on a paper-towel-lined plate to drain. Crucially, leave the rendered bacon grease right there in the skillet; this flavorful fat will be the secret to perfectly cooked, golden-brown fries.

Next, prepare your potatoes. Slice the yellow-skinned potatoes into uniform 1/2-inch long strips. Consistency in size is important here to ensure even cooking. Add these freshly sliced potatoes to the hot bacon grease in the skillet, ensuring they are coated. Give them a good stir every few minutes to prevent sticking and promote even browning. If your cast-iron skillet has a lid, this is the time to utilize it! Place the lid on for a few minutes at a time, stirring in between. This helps to steam the potatoes, making them cook faster and achieve a tender interior while still developing that desired crisp exterior. As the potatoes begin to soften, sprinkle in the smoked paprika and salt, giving everything another thorough stir to distribute the seasonings evenly.

Assembling and Baking Your Loaded Skillet Fries

Continue cooking the potatoes until they are just about fork-tender. This means they should be easily pierced with a fork but still hold their shape. At this point, turn off the heat on the stovetop. Now, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). While the oven heats, take your can of Bush’s® Baked Beans and spread them evenly over the partially cooked fries in the skillet. The rich, savory sauce from the beans will infuse into the potatoes, creating an incredible flavor base.

Generously sprinkle your chosen cheese all over the top of the beans. For this particular recipe, we used Bush’s®Homestyle Baked Beans, which offer a classic, comforting flavor profile. However, Bush’s® offers an impressive selection of seven different flavors, each slow-cooked with their unique blend of spices. Any of their baked bean varieties would be absolutely terrific with this recipe, so feel free to experiment and find your family’s favorite!

Carefully place the entire skillet into the preheated oven and bake for approximately 15 minutes. You’re looking for the cheese to be completely melted, bubbly, and beautifully gooey. Once it reaches this tempting state, remove the skillet from the oven. The final touches are what truly make this dish shine: generously dollop with cool sour cream, sprinkle with freshly sliced green onions for a pop of color and mild oniony flavor, add a few slices of jalapeño for a welcome kick, and finally, crumble the crisped-up bacon over the top.

Serving Suggestions & Customization

One of the best things about this Skillet Loaded Cheese Fries recipe is its versatility in serving. You can embrace the rustic charm of camping by simply placing the hot skillet in the center of your table (with a heatproof trivet, of course!) and letting everyone dig in with multiple forks. This communal style of eating adds to the fun and casual atmosphere of outdoor dining. Alternatively, for a slightly more refined presentation, you can use a spatula to serve individual portions onto plates. Either way, the deliciousness remains unparalleled.

This dish is incredibly adaptable. While perfectly suited for a roaring campfire, it’s equally delicious when prepared indoors on your stovetop and finished in the oven. No matter how or where you serve it, these loaded cheese fries are guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser. They make a fantastic standalone meal for a casual dinner, or they can be an incredible side dish for grilled burgers, hot dogs, or BBQ chicken. Consider adding seasoned ground beef, shredded chicken, or even some leftover pulled pork for an even heartier meal.

Why Cast Iron is Perfect for this Recipe

Cast iron skillets are truly an outdoor cooking enthusiast’s best friend, and they are particularly well-suited for this loaded cheese fries recipe. Here’s why:

  • Even Heat Distribution: Cast iron heats evenly and retains heat exceptionally well, ensuring your fries cook consistently and stay warm long after coming off the fire or out of the oven.
  • Durability: These pans are virtually indestructible, making them perfect for rugged camping trips and cooking over open flames without warping or damage.
  • Natural Non-Stick Surface: With proper seasoning, cast iron develops a natural non-stick surface, which is ideal for frying potatoes and preventing them from sticking.
  • Versatility: A single cast-iron skillet can go from stovetop to oven to campfire, making it a highly efficient and multi-purpose cooking vessel for any environment.
  • Flavor Enhancement: Over time, cast iron cookware absorbs flavors, adding a subtle depth to your dishes that simply can’t be replicated with other materials.

Description

These skillet loaded cheese fries are incredibly easy to make, wonderfully cheesy, and packed with flavor. They are perfect for camping adventures or a casual summer cook-out, making them the best loaded cheese fries you’ll ever try!

Ingredients

Scale

  • 4 strips bacon
  • 3 potatoes, yellow-skinned preferred, sliced into 1/2” strips
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder
  • 1 can (16 oz) Bush’s® Homestyle Baked Beans
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, freshly grated
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • Optional Toppings: green onion, thinly sliced jalapeño

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a 10″ or 12″ cast-iron skillet, lay the bacon strips in an even layer. Cook over medium heat on the stove, flipping once, until the bacon is golden brown and crispy. Carefully remove the cooked bacon with a slotted spoon and transfer it to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain. Leave the rendered bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Add the sliced potatoes to the pan with the leftover bacon grease. Give them a good stir to coat. Cook the fries for 20-22 minutes, stirring frequently to ensure even cooking and browning. If your skillet has a lid, you can cover it occasionally for a few minutes at a time (stirring in between) to help the potatoes cook faster and become tender. Once the fries are just about fork-tender, add the sea salt, smoked paprika, and chili powder. Stir everything together one last time to evenly distribute the seasonings. Remove the skillet from the heat.
  3. Open the can of Bush’s® Baked Beans (including the sauce) and spread them evenly over the top of the potatoes in the skillet. Ensure a good layer of beans covers the fries. Next, sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese generously over the beans.
  4. Carefully place the entire skillet into the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes, or until the cheese is beautifully melted, bubbly, and gooey. Once removed from the oven, immediately top the hot skillet with dollops of sour cream, a sprinkle of sliced green onions, and optional sliced jalapeños. Crumble the crispy bacon from step 1 over the top. Serve immediately, directly from the skillet or in individual portions.

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or on the stovetop for best results.
