I’m still on the high-protein train. Recommendations for protein vary, especially for women who lift weights, and it can be a challenge to meet daily targets on a balanced diet. Because I eat a lot of yogurt and granola, I created this straightforward high-protein granola to boost the protein in my breakfasts and snacks.

How much protein is in this granola?

This granola includes peanut butter and protein powder, so it packs more protein than typical granola. I don’t have a nutrition label here, but I’ll break down the protein contributions:

  • Rolled oats: about 5 grams per 1/2 cup. In the full recipe this contributes approximately 12.5 grams.
  • Protein powder: I used a chocolate whey powder. Roughly 1/3 cup provides about 25 grams of protein, which is the amount used here.
  • Peanut butter: 1/4 cup of natural peanut butter contributes around 16 grams of protein.

Together, this batch contains about 53 grams of protein. If you divide the batch into eight servings, that’s roughly 6 grams per serving. Many people, myself included, eat larger portions, so servings can vary.

Ingredients needed

Here’s what you’ll need for this high-protein granola:

  • Rolled oats: Use large-flake rolled oats (not quick or instant). Choose certified gluten-free oats if needed.
  • Protein powder: Use your favorite powder. Chocolate works wonderfully here, but vanilla or other flavors are fine too.
  • Coconut oil: My preferred oil for granola; avocado oil is a fine substitute.
  • Peanut butter: Use natural unsalted peanut butter for the best texture and flavor in this recipe.
  • Maple syrup: Pure maple syrup is recommended; honey works well as an alternative.
  • Mix-ins: Use about 1 cup total. I like butterscotch chocolate chips, raw almonds, and pepitas, but use any combination you prefer.

Recipe tip

If you add chocolate chips, mix them in after the granola has cooled. Adding them while the granola is hot will melt the chips and create sticky clumps—delicious, but less tidy.

Recipe directions

For a concise set of directions, follow the recipe card below.

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the coconut oil and maple syrup until smooth. Add the peanut butter and whisk again until fully combined. Stir in the protein powder; the mixture will thicken.
  3. Add the rolled oats and all mix-ins except chocolate chips. Stir until the oats are evenly coated.
  4. Spread the mixture in an even layer on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for about 25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and fragrant. Check after 20 minutes and again at 25 to prevent burning.
  5. Allow the granola to cool, then stir in chocolate chips if using. Store in an airtight container once completely cooled.
