The Irresistible Charm of Mint Chocolate Candy Cane Cookies

It’s a match made in culinary heaven, and when you add the delightful crunch of crushed candy canes, you create a truly magical cookie experience. Each bite of these mint chocolate candy cane cookies offers a wonderful textural contrast – a soft, chewy chocolate cookie base studded with melty chocolate chips and crispy bits of peppermint candy cane. It’s a symphony of flavors and textures that simply screams “Christmas!”

Essential Tips for Baking Perfect Chocolate Candy Cane Cookies
Achieving bakery-quality cookies at home is easier than you think, especially with a few expert tips. These chocolate peppermint cookies are quite forgiving, but paying attention to certain details will ensure they turn out perfectly every time. From chilling the dough to crushing the candy canes, here’s what you need to know:
Do you have to chill the cookie dough for chocolate candy cane cookies?
Yes, chilling the dough is a crucial step for these mint chocolate candy cane cookies. It prevents the cookies from spreading too much during baking, resulting in thicker, chewier cookies with a more concentrated flavor. Aim for at least an hour of chilling time. You can even prepare the dough a day or two in advance and store it in the refrigerator, making your holiday baking process even smoother. Add the chocolate chips and crushed candy canes to the dough before chilling, so all the flavors meld beautifully.
Crushing Candy Canes Like a Pro
While pictures might show serene scenes of bakers gently rolling pins over candy canes, the reality can be a bit more… therapeutic! Candy canes are surprisingly resilient. For best results, place your candy canes in a sturdy freezer bag, seal it, and then use a heavy object like a meat mallet, the side of a hammer, or even a heavy-bottomed pan to bash them into pieces. This isn’t just about breaking candy; it’s a fantastic way to release any holiday stress! Just be sure to create a good mix of fine powder and small crunchy bits for the best texture in your cookies.
What About the Cocoa Powder? Dutch Process vs. Regular
Our recipe specifically calls for Dutch-processed cocoa powder. This type of cocoa powder has been treated with an alkali to neutralize its acidity, resulting in a darker color and a milder, less bitter chocolate flavor. It creates a richer, almost black-brown cookie that beautifully contrasts with the white chocolate drizzle and vibrant red candy cane pieces. If you only have regular unsweetened cocoa powder on hand, it will work, but expect a slightly lighter colored cookie with a more intense chocolate flavor. Either way, the mint and candy cane flavors will shine through!
How many cookies does this recipe make?
This recipe for delightful chocolate candy cane cookies yields approximately 38-40 cookies, making it perfect for sharing with friends, family, or bringing to a holiday potluck. One of the best parts is how well these cookies freeze! You can bake a large batch, freeze the cooled cookies in an airtight container for up to two months, and pull them out as needed. This makes holiday entertaining incredibly convenient, ensuring you always have a fresh batch of festive cookies ready to go.

Customizing Your Christmas Cookies: Variations to Try
While these mint chocolate candy cane cookies are perfect as written, the holiday season is all about creativity! Feel free to customize them to suit your taste or what you have on hand:
- **Chocolate Choices:** Instead of semi-sweet, try milk chocolate chips for a sweeter cookie, or dark chocolate for a more intense cocoa flavor. You could also use white chocolate chips within the dough for a triple chocolate effect.
- **Beyond Peppermint:** If mint isn’t your favorite, consider replacing the peppermint extract with almond extract, orange zest, or even a touch of rum extract for a different holiday twist.
- **Toppings Galore:** The white chocolate drizzle is lovely, but you could also use a dark chocolate ganache, a simple glaze made with powdered sugar and milk, or simply dust them with a little extra crushed candy cane right after they come out of the oven. Sprinkles in festive colors are also a fun addition for extra holiday sparkle!
Serving and Gifting Your Festive Cookies
These mint chocolate candy cane cookies are more than just a dessert; they’re a centerpiece of holiday cheer. Serve them alongside a steaming mug of hot cocoa, a cup of coffee, or a tall glass of cold milk for the ultimate treat. They are also incredibly popular at cookie exchanges, sure to be a standout among your collection of holiday bakes. When it comes to gifting, package them in decorative tins or cellophane bags tied with festive ribbons. A homemade batch of these cookies makes a thoughtful and delicious present for neighbors, teachers, friends, and anyone who appreciates the taste of homemade goodness during the holidays.

Description
Start your holiday baking off right with these rich, chocolate cookies with a hint of mint and loads of candy cane crunch. Finish them off with a white chocolate drizzle!
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup dutch process cocoa powder*
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 eggs, room temperature
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp pure peppermint extract
- 1/2 cup crushed candy canes (6-7)
- 3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 4 oz white chocolate, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Make the dough. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment (or using an electric mixer), cream the softened butter until light and fluffy, about 1 minute. Add both the granulated and brown sugars and mix for an additional minute until well combined. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla and peppermint extracts, mixing until just incorporated. With the mixer running on low speed, slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. The dough will be thick and stiff. Fold in the crushed candy canes and chocolate chips. Cover the dough and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350 F (175 C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Using a cookie scoop (about 1.5 tablespoons of dough per cookie), drop mounds of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving enough space between them (approximately 9 cookies per sheet). Bake for about 10 minutes. The cookies should appear slightly underbaked in the center. At this stage, you can gently press a few extra chocolate chips and pieces of candy cane onto the tops of the warm cookies for a prettier finish. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once the cookies have cooled completely, melt the white chocolate. Place the chopped white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until smooth and melted. Drizzle the melted white chocolate over the cooled cookies. Allow the white chocolate to harden completely before storing the cookies.
Cookies can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for 4-5 days, or in the freezer for up to 2 months. Unbaked cookie dough can also be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months; simply thaw slightly before scooping and baking.
Notes
- If you do not have Dutch-processed cocoa powder, you can substitute it with regular unsweetened cocoa powder; however, Dutch-processed cocoa powder provides a significantly darker color and a milder chocolate flavor, which is traditional for these mint chocolate candy cane cookies.
