Unveiling the Simple Ingredients for This Delicious Sausage Ravioli Bake

True to our promise of simplicity, the ingredient list for this easy sausage ravioli bake is wonderfully short, sweet, and accessible. You’ll be delighted to find that most items are likely already in your pantry or easily found at your local grocery store. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need and some tips for making the best choices:

  • Olive Oil: The foundation for sautéing your aromatics, providing a subtle richness to the base.
  • Yellow Onion: Diced finely, it adds a crucial layer of savory depth and natural sweetness once caramelized.
  • Garlic: Freshly minced garlic is non-negotiable for that authentic Italian flavor. Don’t skimp on this!
  • Ground Sausage: This is where you can truly customize. While we love a spicy Italian chorizo for a kick, a mild Italian sausage is perfect for families with younger children or those who prefer a gentler flavor. Plain ground pork works beautifully too, allowing the other seasonings to shine. You could even experiment with ground chicken or turkey sausage for a lighter alternative.
  • Oregano: Dried oregano infuses the sauce with classic Mediterranean herbaceous notes, complementing the sausage and tomato perfectly.
  • Salt: Essential for seasoning the meat and balancing all the flavors in the dish. Adjust to your preference.
  • Pasta Sauce: A good quality marinara sauce is key here. Its vibrant tomato flavor forms the backbone of the bake. Look for brands with natural ingredients and a rich consistency. We highly recommend a robust marinara, but any favorite tomato-based pasta sauce will work wonderfully. The quality of your sauce can significantly elevate the final taste of your casserole.
  • Mozzarella Cheese: Shredded mozzarella provides that irresistible gooey, stretchy, and cheesy layer that defines a great pasta bake. For the best melt, consider shredding your own from a block.
  • Cheese Ravioli: The star of the show! The beauty of this recipe lies in using store-bought fresh or frozen (thawed) ravioli, eliminating the need for pre-boiling. While cheese-filled ravioli is our go-to for its versatility with any meat, spinach and ricotta, or even beef-filled ravioli would also be fantastic choices, just ensure they complement the savory sausage flavor.
  • Parmesan Cheese: A generous sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese over the top adds a sharp, salty, and nutty finish, creating a beautiful golden crust when baked.

Choosing quality ingredients, especially your sausage and pasta sauce, will make a noticeable difference in the overall flavor profile of your finished dish. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different varieties to find your perfect combination!

Crafting Your Easy Ravioli Bake: A Simple Process

One of the many appealing aspects of this sausage ravioli bake is its straightforward cooking process, making it perfect for novice cooks and seasoned chefs alike. From start to finish, you’re looking at approximately one hour of your time, including both prep and baking. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable cooking experience, we highly recommend practicing “mise en place” – getting all your ingredients prepped and ready before you even turn on the stove. You can even chop your onion and garlic the night before to save precious minutes on a busy weeknight.

The cooking process involves a few simple steps. First, you’ll brown the ground sausage with fragrant onions and garlic, creating a flavorful base. This savory mixture is then combined with your chosen pasta sauce. Next comes the fun part: layering! You’ll spread half of the rich sausage and sauce mixture into a baking dish, followed by a generous sprinkle of shredded mozzarella, then a layer of uncooked ravioli. This layering is repeated, culminating in a final sprinkle of cheeses that promises a golden, bubbly top. The casserole is then covered and baked, allowing the ravioli to cook perfectly in the steamy, cheesy sauce, before a quick broil to achieve that irresistible browned crust. It’s a truly hands-off baking experience that transforms simple ingredients into a gourmet-tasting casserole.

The Magic of No-Boil Ravioli: A Game Changer

One of the most frequently asked questions about pasta bakes involving fresh or frozen pasta is whether pre-boiling is necessary. For this incredible sausage ravioli bake, the answer is a resounding NO! And that, my friends, is truly the beauty and genius of this dish. Forget the extra pot to wash, the waiting for water to boil, and the delicate handling of par-cooked pasta. This recipe is designed for ultimate convenience.

The uncooked ravioli softens and bakes directly in the hot, flavorful pasta sauce, enveloped by layers of bubbling cheese. The steam trapped by the foil cover during the initial baking phase creates a perfect environment, allowing the pasta to cook through while absorbing all the delicious flavors of the sausage and marinara. This method not only saves you precious time and minimizes cleanup but also ensures that every piece of ravioli is infused with rich, savory goodness, rather than just being a bland carrier for the sauce. It’s a true one-pan (or rather, one-dish) wonder that perfectly embodies the spirit of easy, comforting cooking.

Mastering Make-Ahead and Freezing for Ultimate Convenience

Life can be unpredictable, and having a delicious, homemade meal ready to go can be a lifesaver. This sausage ravioli bake is incredibly accommodating when it comes to make-ahead preparation, offering several options to fit your busy schedule:

  • Ingredient Prep Ahead: The simplest way to get a head start is to prep your ingredients. Dice the onion, mince the garlic, and even brown the ground sausage with the aromatics and seasonings. Once cooked, combine it with the pasta sauce and store this savory mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. When you’re ready to bake, simply assemble the layers with the ravioli and cheese, then proceed with baking.
  • Assemble Ahead and Refrigerate: For maximum convenience, you can fully assemble the entire casserole in your baking dish, cover it tightly with foil, and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24-48 hours. When it’s dinner time, simply transfer the cold casserole directly to a preheated oven. Since it will be starting from a chilled state, you’ll need to increase the baking time. Expect to bake it covered for approximately 45-60 minutes, or until it’s thoroughly heated through and bubbling vigorously, before removing the foil and broiling for a golden top.
  • Bake and Freeze for Future Meals: This casserole freezes beautifully, making it an excellent candidate for meal prepping. Once the dish is fully baked and has cooled completely to room temperature, cover it tightly with a double layer of foil or transfer individual portions to freezer-safe containers. It can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months.

To Reheat from Frozen: Thaw the frozen casserole overnight in the refrigerator. Once thawed, bake the covered casserole in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for about 45-60 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly. If baking from frozen without thawing, it will take considerably longer, often 1.5 to 2 hours, still covered, before uncovering and broiling briefly.

These make-ahead options ensure that even on your busiest days, a comforting and flavorful homemade meal is always within reach, minimizing stress and maximizing enjoyment.

Description

This super easy ravioli bake is the perfect weeknight meal. Use store-bought ravioli to keep things simple, and have dinner on the table in no time!

Ingredients

Scale
1x2x3x
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb ground pork sausage*
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 jar (600mL) marinara sauce
  • 2 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 package (around 600grams) ravioli**
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly spray an 11 x 7-inch baking dish with nonstick spray. In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced yellow onion and sauté for 4-5 minutes, or until it becomes soft and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant. Add the ground pork sausage, dried oregano, and salt. Cook, breaking up the meat with a large wooden spoon, until the sausage is entirely browned and no pink remains, which usually takes about 6-7 minutes.
  2. To the browned sausage mixture in the same pan, pour in the marinara pasta sauce and stir well to combine all ingredients. Remove the pan from the heat. In your prepared baking dish, spread half of this savory sausage and sauce mixture evenly across the bottom. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese over the sausage layer. Next, arrange half of the ravioli from the package over the cheese. It’s perfectly fine if the ravioli pieces don’t tightly touch each other; they will expand as they cook.
  3. Repeat the layering process one more time: add the remaining sausage mixture, followed by another generous sprinkle of shredded mozzarella cheese, and then the rest of the ravioli. Finish this top layer of ravioli with an extra sprinkle of mozzarella cheese for ultimate cheesiness, then evenly distribute the grated Parmesan cheese over the entire top. Take a large piece of tinfoil, spray one side with nonstick spray, and place the sprayed side down over the casserole dish. Tightly pinch the edges of the foil around the dish to seal it, creating a steamy environment for the ravioli to cook.
  4. Bake the covered casserole in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly around the edges. Carefully remove the foil from the top of the dish. Increase the oven temperature to broil, and bake for another 1-2 minutes, watching closely, until the cheese is golden brown and bubbly. Remove the casserole dish from the oven and place it on a heat-safe counter or wire rack to cool for 10 minutes before serving. This resting period allows the casserole to set, making it easier to serve.

Leftovers, once completely cooled, can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. This delicious casserole also freezes well for up to 2 months. To reheat from frozen, thaw overnight in the fridge, then bake (covered) for about 1 hour at 350°F (175°C).

Notes

*For the ground pork sausage, feel free to use your favorite! I enjoy spicy Italian chorizo for a bit of heat, but mild Italian sausage or even plain ground pork works beautifully, especially if feeding children.

**I recommend using cheese-filled ravioli for a harmonious flavor, or a sausage-filled variety if you prefer. Avoid highly flavored fillings that might clash with the ground sausage in the sauce.
